An update for those wanting to contribute art for our Stedelijk Museum-project. We did another performance test with Layar on the Museumplein and viewed a variety of 3D-objects. There were some general things we ran into, which we’d like to share with you. The following points are things to consider and possibly take into account when working on your concept:

  • Loading time. Layar has to load your model and this takes a noticable amount of time, on average from 5 to 30 seconds.
  • Distance. Your model will start to load when you’re standing at a distance of 20 meters.
  • Fluctuating position. Keep in mind that it’s very hard to tie a 3D-model down to a precise fixed location. It’s also not possible (yet) to place virtual objects very precisely on real surfaces. You should take into account that the object will hover around the given coordinates with a fluctuation of 5 to 20 meters. It’s best for objects to be freely located, on the ground or in the air.
  • Gravity. You could put your object on the grond (seen viewing down) or you could put it in the air (seen viewing up). Don’t forget that if you put an object in the air, the model needs a bottom. Unless you want it to be looked through of course.
  • Complexity. We recommend a maximum of 10.000 faces and advise you not to use complex detailed forms. Complex and detailed object are hard to view on the small screens of smartphones.
  • Depth. If you want to achieve a good depth perception with your 3D-object, think about using different colors for different sides of the object. (See example 4 below.) Especially when working with 3D-typography.
  • Color. We recommend the use of bright colors in order for your model to have good visibility.

If you haven’t seen them yet, here are some visuals of a few things Interactive Media-students from the Hogeschool van Amsterdam came up with for a minor:

And because still images just don’t really do the trick, we’ve also got a (dare we say fun?) video from the performance test we did on the Museumplein last Tuesday. This way you can get an impression of the experience when using Layar. Also, there are some interesting works in there which might be useful and inspiring for your concept. Although spoken in Dutch, the video is provided with English subtitles. View in 720p and full screen for best quality.

So, be creative and have your way with these pointers! Good luck!

Last week we have been gathering some questions concerning our call for art students and combined them in a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). So if you’re wondering what augmented reality is, or perhaps what Layar does, or just want to know what steps you need to take if you want to contribute art, just check out our fresh and new FAQ.

Another new section we created is the Press-section. Over the last couple of weeks some external parties found their way to our blog and gave some attention to our project, for which we are very grateful. If you would like to write about our project, you can find the necessary logo’s and our flyer there. You’re also welcome to contact us if you have any questions (if you can’t find them in our fresh and new FAQ that is ;) ).

Last Thursday was the ARtours (augmented reality tours) kickoff for the longterm project running for the Stedelijk Museum. Many varying parties were there from the cultural and educational field, as were commercial and technical partners. The event was started by Margriet Schavemaker who held a warm and welcoming opening speech. Then she passed the microphone to Hein Wils, the new ARtours project manager for the Stedelijk. He told us about the project on a longterm and gave a impression of the timeline in how the Stedelijk wants to realize the augemented reality tour. After Hein, it was up to Jeroen van Erp, creative director at Fabrique. Jeroen gave a very extensive overview of the many, many things that are possible with augmented reality. At Fabrique they came up with a lot of varying concept ideas, the one more fascinating than the other. Very interesting! Then it was time for our very own Erik to take the stage and give a presentation on behalf of YOR. Afterwards, we had the chance to talk with the many different partners of the Stedelijk Museum and were delighted to find out that people were excited about our project. There was also the possibility to see some real augmented reality in action. The people from the ARLab from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague provided the attendees with a little installation. All in all, it was a very fun and interesting afternoon!

What if you can put your artwork anywhere? What if you don’t even have to take gravity into consideration? What would your artwork look like? We are looking for art students who have original ideas. We want to exhibit virtual 3D-art in the public space. These works will be visible with the mobile application Layar for the iPhone and Android-based smartphones. Delivering concepts and drawings is sufficient. Curators from the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will select around 15 entries. When needed YOR will provide you with guidance for creating 3D. More info? Check The Exposition page!
